This week we had Olivia from Fallibroome Academy in with us to gain experience and insight into working in a marketing agency. Throughout the week she worked on a number of projects, even contributing to a number of creative idea sessions. The Onside team thoroughly enjoyed having her here and hope to see her in the future.

I had a wonderful time at Onside for my work experience. I learnt a great deal about the varied sections within a marketing agency such as advertising, web design, social media engagement and the importance of marketing. The team at Onside are all truly lovely, inviting people and brimming with enthusiasm for their work. The atmosphere at Onside is very cheerful, encouraging me to feel instantly at ease in the work-place. Which I felt made it easier for myself as quite a systematic, shy person be able to think more creatively and speak up, to share my ideas. Furthermore, I learnt that at Onside they work in such an ebullient environment to explore creative ideas and craft a new diverse concept that correlates with the brand and ensures brilliant results. In my time with Onside, John educated me on how to use social media for marketing, by displaying information in a certain way to create a personality for the company or brand that’s more inviting and welcoming to customers, so the brand has a bigger online presence, which gets companies noticed in today’s high intensity, developing, fast paced market. It was very interesting learning how to set up online profiles for companies on platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Google+ and Instagram, understanding how much social media affects brand recognition and visibility online, such as how creating a Google+ account strengthens a companies SEO. I thoroughly enjoyed working with the whole team over the week, and feel it’s been a great experience.
GOgraphene – Bringing all the elements together
Our client William Blythe commissioned us to launch a new product they were taking to market after years of development with the initial aim to sell online. Graphene Oxide (GO) is one of the most exciting materials to have been developed in recent times, and William Blythe are uniquely positioned to provide both consistent quality and high quantity volumes of Graphene Oxide, in both dispersion and powder forms. To stand out in a global market, this required a memorable brand name and eye-catching brand presentation that will work both online to engage with their audience and ultimately sell the product.
Onside created the name GOgraphene and based the colour palette on tints of the actual product colouring alongside complimentary shades. The logo device itself is memorable, can be used in isolation, and a nod towards the hexagonal structure of the material. This branding was then integrated across social media channels which support the eCommerce site with copy content developed by Onside based on William Blythe’s base copy, and bespoke imagery photographed on location by Onside. The online store positions the brand and product perfectly, educating and engaging the visitor whilst ultimately navigating traffic to the checkout and keeping it simple to buy Graphene Oxide. SEO carried out on the site ensures it will have a strong organic SERP positioning over time, with traffic initially driven to the site via a targeted global Google Adwords campaign. We were recently commissioned by William Blythe to design and create a fresh new exhibition presence, for an upcoming show in Switzerland. The company are global leaders in researching and developing a wide array of chemicals, used in a multitude of industries and for a diverse range of purpose (such as catalysts, coatings, electronics, food, life sciences, pigments, plating, polymer additives and screen printing!). Therefore, displaying all of this information in a simple, clear manner presented a challenge.
Given William Blythe regularly attend exhibitions throughout the world, they require a stand that is portable, simple to construct, and allows them the flexibility of being effective, regardless of the floor space available. In addition to this brief, the graphics must be interchangeable depending on the ‘theme’ of the show and the audience attending.
Clearly, the generic printed show literature is unable to be altered from event to event, however our design and concept ensured that information is clear and digestible, and easy to find – rather than confuse. Their range of specialism described in the content actually serves to impress and reassure the audience of William Blythe’s experience. Space within the marketing literature was limited, so it was necessary to keep copy minimal. However, with the introduction of clever strap lines, infographics, and a new colour palette, navigation through the literature remains informative and logical.
Following the exhibition in Switzerland, feedback was overwhelmingly positive and we are currently working on rolling out this format of marketing literature with William Blythe, to work across multiple countries and languages, in a addition to upcoming online and digital marketing projects.

With a name like Onside, you would expect our team to be a relatively active bunch. Well, you’d be right! To add to his list of many pastimes that include surfing, football and cycling, Onside John is training for his annual participation in the Great Manchester Run. As part of a group of runners from the Alderley Edge community and The Kirsty Club, this year he is raising funds for Francis House Children’s Hospice. They are a Manchester based charity who provide invaluable care for children and young adults with life threatening conditions, and their families, who can find a place of fun and enjoyment at such a tough time. Every penny raised will make a huge difference and gratefully received.

Alderley Edge is a great place to work – not just because it’s a beautiful village in a great location with bags of character, but because of the vibrant community spirit and friendly people. When we first moved here a few years ago, Onside arranged a friendly one-off game of 5 a side football against our neighbours, The Bubbleroom, in Alderley Edge. The game was such a success and enjoyed to such an extent that we have got together almost every week since, with ever growing numbers. It’s a great way of Alderley locals and businesses to get together, and even some of our regular Onside clients have featured in our starting line up! Did you notice Google has removed the right hand side PPC ads?
It may well have come to your attention that Google has removed all PPC ads that used to appear on the right hand side of the results page. How does this affect you? Well, for those of you that rely of traffic from paid ads, the number of ads that appear at the top of the SERP has increased for most queries, although there are less ads overall with the removal of sidebar ads. Therefore, it’s highly likely that keyword costs will go up given higher competition for keywords. For those relying on organic results, the additional ad at the top of the page has forced the organic listings down, meaning that there are less organic search results displaying above the fold. On a positive note, Google has increased the number of organic search results appearing on each page, however this doesn’t change the fact that there will be greater competition for organic rankings, and therefore more emphasis on strengthening your SEO.
